AI Search Is Changing How Customers Find You — Here's How to Show Up
For twenty years, being visible online meant ranking in a list of blue links. That's changing fast. Google now answers many searches directly with an AI Overview at the top of the page, and a growing share of customers skip Google entirely and ask ChatGPT or Perplexity. When AI answers the question, the businesses it cites get the customer — everyone else is invisible.
What's actually changed
When someone searches "best accountant for contractors london" or "how much does a kitchen extension cost", they increasingly get a synthesised answer citing a handful of sources, rather than a page of links. Two consequences follow. Fewer clicks overall — informational searches get answered on the spot. And a winner-takes-more dynamic: being one of the three cited sources is worth far more than ranking seventh.
The good news: the fundamentals overlap
AI systems choose sources much the way Google always has — they favour pages that are clearly structured, factually specific, genuinely authoritative and technically accessible. If your SEO fundamentals are right, you're most of the way there. But some things matter more than before:
- —Direct answers: pages that state the answer plainly ("A typical rewire of a 3-bed house takes 5–10 days and costs £3,500–£5,500") get cited; pages that talk around it don't
- —FAQ content with real questions and complete answers — exactly the format AI likes to quote
- —Structured data, so machines understand your business, services, prices and reviews
- —Being crawlable: some sites accidentally block AI crawlers entirely in robots.txt
- —Consistent facts about your business everywhere online — AI cross-references
How to check where you stand
Search your key phrases and look at the AI Overview: are you cited? Ask ChatGPT "who should I use for [your service] in [your area]?" and see who it names. Do this monthly — the landscape moves quickly, and most small businesses have no idea whether they're visible in AI results at all.
We build every site with this in mind — clean structure, direct answers, full structured data, and a robots.txt that welcomes the crawlers that matter. We also built Verosite Visibility, a tool that tracks your Google rankings and AI Overview citations side by side, precisely because "are we showing up in AI?" was a question nobody could answer. If you want to know where you stand, get in touch — this is the shift worth getting ahead of.
