7 Signs It's Time to Redesign Your Website

No website lasts forever. Design norms shift, Google's expectations rise, and your business changes. Most owners can't see their own site the way a first-time visitor does — so here are seven concrete signs it's time, ranked roughly by how urgently they cost you money.

1. It's awkward on a phone

Most visits to a local business website now happen on a phone. If visitors need to pinch-zoom, if buttons are too small to tap, or if the menu misbehaves, you're losing more than half your audience at the door. This is the single most expensive problem on this list.

2. It takes more than three seconds to load

Visitors give up quickly, and Google ranks slow sites lower. Test it on your phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. If you're watching a spinner, so are your customers — briefly, before they leave.

3. You can't update it yourself

If changing your opening hours means emailing a developer and waiting a week (or the developer has vanished entirely — astonishingly common), your website is frozen in time. Stale content erodes trust and rankings. A modern site should let you edit content as easily as writing an email.

4. It no longer reflects the business

You've added services, dropped others, gone upmarket, doubled in size — but the website still describes the business you were three years ago. Visitors take it literally: they can only buy what the site says you sell.

5. Enquiries are flat while the market isn't

If footfall, referrals or ad spend are steady but web enquiries have drifted down, your site is usually the leak — rankings slipping to fresher competitors, or a contact experience with too much friction. A redesign with proper SEO structure typically shows measurable improvement within a few months.

6. It embarrasses you

The simplest test on the list: would you proudly send a big prospect your homepage? If you hesitate, your customers already noticed. Design is a proxy for competence — unfairly, but reliably.

7. The foundations are obsolete

No HTTPS padlock, a years-out-of-date platform, plugins that can't be updated, hosting that falls over — these are quiet risks that eventually become loud ones (hacks, blacklistings, sudden outages). Rebuilding on a modern stack removes a whole category of 3am problems.

If two or more of these hit home, it's worth a conversation. Book a free 20-minute consultation and we'll audit your current site together — what's worth keeping, what's costing you, and what a rebuild would realistically involve. No obligation, and you'll leave with a clear picture either way.
