SEO Basics for Small Businesses: What Actually Moves the Needle

SEO attracts more mystique — and more snake oil — than any other corner of marketing. The truth is less exciting and more useful: for a small business, rankings come from a handful of fundamentals done consistently. Here they are, in plain English.

Match pages to searches, one to one

Google ranks pages, not websites. If you're a physio offering sports massage, back pain treatment and post-surgery rehab, those should be three pages, each with a clear title, not three paragraphs on one "Services" page. The single most common SEO problem we see on small business sites is one page trying to rank for ten things and ranking for none.

Start from the searches: what would your ideal customer type into Google? Each distinct intent deserves its own page that answers it properly.

Write for people; structure for machines

Content doesn't need to be clever — it needs to be genuinely useful and clearly organised. Use real headings (not just bold text), answer the questions customers actually ask, and be specific: prices or price ranges, timelines, areas served, photos of real work. Specificity is what separates a page that ranks and converts from generic filler.

Structured data (Schema markup) is the machine-readable layer — it tells Google you're a local business, that these are FAQs, that this is a product with a price. It's invisible to visitors and increasingly important, especially now AI search summarises pages instead of just listing them.

Speed and mobile aren't optional

Google measures how fast your pages load and how they behave on phones, and slow sites rank worse and convert worse. This is largely determined by how your site is built — which is why we build on Next.js and Vercel, and why a fast foundation is cheaper to buy once than to retrofit later.

Links still matter — earn them locally

Links from other sites remain a strong trust signal. Small businesses don't need hundreds: a profile from your trade body, your chamber of commerce, local press, suppliers, and the directories relevant to your industry form a solid base. Never buy links from anyone who emails you offering them — that's how sites get penalised.

What to ignore

  • Meta keywords — ignored by Google for over a decade
  • Anyone guaranteeing "#1 on Google" — nobody controls that
  • Daily blogging for its own sake — ten useful pages beat a hundred thin ones
  • Obsessing over one ranking position — track leads and enquiries instead

The realistic timeline

SEO compounds. Technical fixes can show movement in weeks; competitive rankings typically take four to six months of consistent effort. That's exactly why it rewards small businesses that start now and stick with it — most of your competitors won't.
