Wix, Squarespace or a Custom Website? An Honest Comparison

Let's start with something a web design studio isn't supposed to say: Wix and Squarespace are genuinely good products, and for some businesses they're the right choice. The interesting question isn't "which is better" — it's "which is right for where your business is now, and where it's going".

When a website builder is the right call

A DIY builder makes sense when most of these are true:

  • You're validating a brand-new business and don't yet know if it has legs
  • Your budget is genuinely under £500
  • You enjoy tinkering and have the evenings to spare
  • Your customers come mainly from word of mouth or social media, not Google
  • A standard look is fine for your market

Where builders start to hurt

Speed and SEO are the big ones. Builder sites carry a lot of generic code, and page speed is a ranking factor — in competitive local markets ("plumber croydon", "accountant manchester"), the difference between a fast custom site and a slow template site shows up in where you rank and how many visitors stay.

Then there's the sameness problem. Templates look like templates. If your competitors used the same one, your business looks interchangeable — which matters when a customer has five tabs open comparing options.

Finally, the ceiling. The day you need something the builder doesn't offer — a booking flow that matches how you actually work, a CRM integration, a customer portal, multilingual content — you hit a wall, and the answer becomes a rebuild anyway. Many of our clients come to us at exactly this point, wishing they'd made the jump a year earlier.

What custom actually gets you

A custom site built on a modern stack (we use Next.js and Vercel) is faster than any builder, structured around the searches your customers actually type, designed for your brand rather than adapted from a theme, and extendable — when your business grows a new arm, your website grows with it instead of being thrown away.

The trade-off is honest: it costs more upfront and you need someone to look after it. That's why the right comparison isn't builder-vs-custom in the abstract — it's the total cost of each over three years, including your time, missed rankings and an eventual rebuild.

Our honest rule of thumb

If your website is a business card, a builder is fine. If your website is how customers find and choose you — if search rankings, credibility and conversions genuinely affect your revenue — a custom site typically pays for itself. Not sure which you are? That's exactly what our free 20-minute consultation is for. We'll tell you honestly if a builder is enough for your situation — it costs us nothing to be truthful and it's better for everyone.
